There is a strong and intensifying trend of cybercriminals targeting high-net-worth individuals.
Barclays bank reports that the “staggering rise of cyber-attacks over the pandemic means the wealthy should consider how best to protect themselves from cybercrime.”
Barclays also states they are perceived to be high-value targets without the same level of security as corporations.
That assessment by cybercriminals is, by and large, accurate. Most high-net-worth individuals are walking targets, having little or no idea how their own daily activities are compromising their own and their family’s privacy.
The FBI reported a record-shattering 791,790 complaints of cybercrime in 2020, with losses exceeding $4 billion. And that trend is accelerating.
This is an alarming state of affairs, given that a recent study indicated that well over 25% of ultra-high-net-worth families, family offices, and family businesses have been targeted by cybercriminals.
According to the same study, 98% of very wealthy families cited reputation as “important to their family’s success.” Yet only a third of these families had conducted rudimentary cybercrime awareness training!
